SC prayed to remove Sindh governor, MQM MPs

LAHORE: Watan Party Chairman Barrister Zafarullah Khan on Tuesday moved a petition before the Supreme Court requesting it to remove Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad and all MQM parliamentarians for being involved in criminal activities in light of the statement given by death row convict Saulat Mirza.

Zafarullah stated that on March 18, the president deferred the execution of condemned prisoner and MQM worker Saulat Mirza who made sensational revelations hours before his execution in Balochistan’s Machh Jail. He said Saulat raised allegations against Governor Ishratul Ibad and some other leaders of the MQM also, besides party chief Altaf Hussain. He said Altaf, who is a British national, was running MQM and his party had sizeable seats in national as well as provincial assemblies and the Senate. He said several criminal cases were pending against many MQM parliamentarians wherein they have been accused of supporting terrorism in Karachi. He said MQM is accused of threatening Pakistani armed forces as well as stealing of weapons from US containers on way to Afghanistan via Karachi.

The petitioner said the allegations made by Saulat Mirza against Governor Ishratul Ibad require that he be removed from the office so that an inquiry can be held against him which is not possible otherwise due to constitutional immunity under Article 248(2).

He said that the registration of case against Altaf Hussain under terrorism charges proves his revolt against the paramilitary forces which is also a direct challenge to the sovereignty and integrity of the state. He requested the court to order action against MQM parliamentarians for their involvement in crimes in the light of the statement of Saulat Mirza.
