American official pledges support to Pakistan in fighting terrorism


CHICAGO – A top official of the US State of Illinois has denounced acts of terrorism being perpetrated in Pakistan, especially the attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, while assuring Islamabad of Washington's support in fighting the menace.

“It was an inhuman act,” Illinois' Secretary of State Jesse White said after watching a video of the Taliban attack in which 140 students were killed. The occasion was a well-attended reception held by the Pakistani Consulate General in Chicago, to mark Pakistan Day at which Secretary White conveyed the good wishes of the United States to the government and people of Pakistan as well as to the members of Pakistani community here.

Apart from Secretary White, representatives of Illinois governor, Senator Mark Kirk, city mayor and the attorney general attended the reception. Thirty-four consul generals and members of the Pakistani members were also present. The event began with recitation from the holy Quran followed by playing of national anthems of Pakistan and the United States.

Consul General Faisal Niaz Tirmizi told the gathering of over 250 people that despite huge challenges over the last thirty years, Pakistan had registered a remarkable growth rate, and has the best performing stock exchange in the world.Tirmizi said that democracy had taken roots and Pakistan would remain a major player in all fields. The event was rounded off with a mystical dance performance on a sufi rendition of Bulleh Shah that drew warm applause.
