Efforts against terrorists bearing fruits: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that the successful holding of Pakistan Day parade in a peaceful environment reflects that peace-achieving efforts of the government are going successful.

Talking to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmakers from Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad and Gujrat at the PM’s House, Nawaz said that terrorism has to be eliminated from the country, and for this purpose, a 20-point agenda has been agreed upon by all political parties and is being implemented as the National Action Plan.

The prime minister said periods of dictatorship in Pakistan gave breeding grounds for terrorism and extremism in the country, and now the democratic government was taking steps to eradicate this menace.

He said the situation in Karachi was improving with each passing day. “This goes to the credit of PML-N government to have taken this decision of starting an operation in the provincial capital against miscreants and terrorists after taking all parties on board,” he said.

The prime minister said that before starting Zarb-e-Azb operation, the government made all-out efforts to resolve the problem through dialogue and talks, waiting patiently for the results, but when all our efforts failed, “we started this operation, which has dismantled terrorist network and destroyed their hideouts”.

In the backdrop of his recent visit to Sialkot, the prime minister said the government has decided to construct a four-lane expressway from Sialkot to Lahore, which would reduce travel time between the cities to around 50 minutes.

He said motorways were being made across the country to bring people closer to each other, which help businesses and generate more job opportunities.

He said, “We are planning construction of a highway with Chinese cooperation from Khunjerab to Gwadar. Gwadar would be made an international port and an international city,” he said. The prime minister said that the government had inherited the energy problem, but “we are moving towards a solution despite our limited resources”.

He said that in order to meet power shortage, LNG-based power plants were being set up through the PSDP funding in Pakistan, which would generate 3,600MW electricity. “In addition, negotiations are underway for the import of electricity from China,” he said. The prime minister said that several hydropower, wind and solar projects were also underway, which would add a total of around 10,000MW additional electricity to the national grid by the end of 2017.

The prime minister emphasised that corruption at any level in any department would not be tolerated and anybody involved in corrupt practices would be dealt with an iron hand.

He congratulated the nation on a bumper wheat crop expected this year and said measures were being taken to take maximum benefit of this. “We are working to reduce inputs of agricultural products,” he said.

The prime minister said that farmers should get due share of their hard work and approved forming a committee for looking into the matter of agricultural subsidies for different areas according to their specific conditions, for giving recommendations to increase wheat and rice export, solar-based home water solutions and solar tube-wells. The committee includes Engr Khurram Dastgir Khan, Sikandar Bosan, Nasir Iqbal Bosal and Daniyal Aziz.
